Will Congress ever upgrade the fuel-efficiency rules?

A key auto industry group approved a House proposal to arouse standards of gas mileage for new passenger vehicles by 2022 to at least 32 miles per gallon. They say it is more sensible approach than a Senate plan which was approved a month ago.

The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, which members are: Ford Motor Co., General Motors Corp., DaimlerChrysler and Toyota Motor Corp. have in plans to build support for the cars that require more on a gasoline gallon. The Alliance is against a competing measure, according to which by 2018 there would be 35 miles per gallon for new vehicles.
The president of Auto Alliance Dave McCurdy calls this “a rational increase in fuel economy”.
In their turn, Lee Terry, R-Neb., and Reps. Baron Hill, D-Ind., suggested by 2022 arousing of so-called CAFE standards for cars and trucks up to 35 miles per gallon (or a min. of 32 miles per gallon). The problem is the Congress has not made any changes in the fuel-efficiency rules since the mid-1970s.
